so i started this home-made printing thing called "BOO!". I basicaly come up with designs on my computer and print them on t-shirts, hoodies, purses, hats...that sort of thing. Its been going pretty good but, ive only been using mens size small and youth large for my t-shirts. Id like to expand my shirt styles, instead of just having one kind of t-shirt. If anyone knows of a place online i could buy in bulk for a reasonable price per T that has more than just regular t-shirts, i would LOVE to know. thanks!
i plan to gradualy get larger. Its just me making the shirts right now, and i order ink and shirts through my buddy who owns monster merch. I pretty much came up with three solid designs...made test shirts...took photos of them and posted them on myspace with the details on how many shirts i plan on getting, shirt and ink colors, shirt sizes and shirt prices. Before i knew it, i was sold out in every size and every shirt. Now all the sudden all these people are wanting to "help me" and some dude is making me a web site and i didnt have to ask or pay for it at all.
all i need to know how to do now is...
how to get a resale license, how to get my stuff copyrighted, and how much all that is going to cost.
To get a resale license or any type of business license, you need to set up a business. You will need either a small business or corporation status. When you apply for a business license at your local state level, the resale license number will most likely appear on your actual business license or they will ask you if you want a resale number. When I had my business in IL, I remember being asked if I will be selling anything. Anyway, to do this, you will need around 350 dollars and any attorney can do this for you or any CPA. You can also do this yourself, but the paperwork is kind of tricky and it is better to have a professional do it.
If the only reason you need a resale license is to people sell to you wholesale and you don't have the funds, you may want to start buying t-shirts for cheap on ebay or local stores. The price may be a bit higher, but at least you'll be earning some profit.
Copyrighting you can also do yourself. http://www.copyright.gov/ The advantage of doing this through a copyright attorney is they take care of the paperwork and they usually know people in the office to get your stuff copyrighted faster. You would probably be looking for around $500.00 for that too or more if the attorney has to take more time researching if a similar product is already copyrighted. The fastest way to get a copyright is to sell your stuff with the design you want to protect over state lines. You need proof that it went over state lines. I've heard this from an attorney I worked with before, not the copyright office...so I don't know how true it is. But, hey it can't hurt.
wow... so in order to not get in trouble i have to spend 350 dollars and get an attorney? And if i dont want people to steal my stuff i have to pay 500 bucks?
Basically. Rates may vary slightly from state to state, but that's pretty much it. Think of it this way though, it's a one time fee (except when you have renew your business licence every year, but that's not a huge expense). And then you will be all set to conduct your business. And you really don't want someone copying your designs. If that's a priority for you, then definetly do that first.
awesome, thanks. One of my friends started some line of clothing in california, but she said she based her place out of Mexico to avoid some of the stupid rules we have here.
