Hair Dye Help

I want something new and fun. I've done about every color except black so I'm not afraid to try anything new, but I do want something I can do myself (I'm so fickle that I refuse to pay oodles at a salon when I know I'm going to want to change it entirely in two months). Anna mentioned Manic Panic (I think that was it?) from Sally Beauty. Has anyone used this? Any other suggestions? I'm thinking a bright red, but not carrot.

Don't reds fade fast?  You might want to just talk with someone who dyes hair or who has gone red to see what kind of shade you will need for the color you want.

i've done Manic Panic back in university. it's great for doing yourself! just make sure the hair you're painting is bleached first, else the colour won't come out as vibrant. also, it fades DRAMATICALLY with every wash. i had to reapply every week. wasn't a big deal since i was only dying my bangs and a few bits on the side, but i could see this becoming a giant hassle if you're you're whole head.

good luck!

Hmmm... thanks for the info. I was not planning on bleaching first as I don't have enough faith in my "at home" skills to do that myself so maybe I'll just check out something more permanent. It would drive me nuts to have to do it every week.

Yup! Too nervous about the bleach and dying every week, I just went with good ol' Loreal Preference. The picture from our friend's 40th on my blog shows my new color (http://spaces.msn.com/members/lindsaycoats/). I didn't do a really good job cause I was kind of in a hurry, but I like it. I still need something more daring. I may buckle down and ask a friend to help with the bleaching. But what does that do to your hair? Totally dry it out? Anyone have experience? Or another technique that will get me brighter, bolder color?

Wheathins are tasteless and I think you guys should have won.  I bleach my hair often, usually not the whole head but certain pieces.  It does dry out but only after repeated bleaching of the same spot.  If you do just highlight type pieces, it will be fine.  Just leave hair conditioner on longer when you shampoo to help replenish some of the moisture.  Although, your hair is pretty darn red right now.  Hmmm, I'm getting ideas for myself...
