This book is GREAT. Not a good tutor if you're just learning to knit (I would strongly suggest a class or something where you can learn in person), but it has really cool patterns and it's oddly enough a fun read! :) There's a second book called "Stitch n' Bitch Nation" with lots more patterns - some really cute purses and bags especially.

Also, if you're into the book, there are groups all over the nation that get together to knit. I've gone a couple times to the one in Phoenix and everyone was really nice. This is a great place to learn too! http://www.stitchnbitch.org/snb_groups.htm
