It's time that I move on to my next NY resolution. I'm going to start jogging. Anyone have any pointers? I plan on jogging outside since I am way too cheap to pay for a gym membership. How long should I jog for the first time? I should probably add that I haven't ran since HS (10 years ago) and I hated it then.
I'm not a jogger but I try to jog every now and then when I walk. I would say start power walking and mix in some jogging whenever you are able to job (not out of breath and stuff). You'll be able to build upon it and jog for longer each time you do that.
I have been running for about 4 years now. One of the most common problems people encounter when starting to run are: running out of breath. I HIGHLY recommend checking out the www.runningroom.com site. Under "fun stuff", check out the running tips. They will tell you how to breath (you breath from your stomach not your lungs), tips on posture, etc. All those put together, I guarantee you will enjoy running and sticking to it. The Running Room is also a big advocate on the 1/10 running technique. This mainly applies to new runners as well as veteran runners going for long runs. What it is is you run for 10 minutes and walk for a minture, run for ten minutes, walk for a minute and so on. This gives your body a break as well as a chance to stretch out your muscles. The other important thing is - don't run fast or you'll exhaust all your energy. If you're running and can't carry a comfortable conversation, you are running too fast and you'll just end up getting tired and give up. You may also find a Running Room store in your area. They offer clinics and all sorts of stuff. But start by checking out their website and good luck!!!
